Import Risks
Importing fasteners directly may appear less expensive, but it exposes the buyer to substantial technical, financial and legal risks. These include:
- incorrect specifications
- substituted raw materials
- improper heat treatment
- inadequate plating
- hydrogen embrittlement
- dimensional problems
- products that fail to meet the required ASTM, SAE, ISO or customer specifications
The buyer must also manage factory qualification, production inspections, independent testing, lot traceability, certificates of conformance and required Fastener Quality Act records. A factory-issued test report alone does not necessarily prove that the product complies.
Customs
Customs creates additional exposure. Incorrect tariff classifications, country-of-origin declarations, customs values or antidumping and countervailing-duty determinations can result in unexpected charges, shipment delays, audits and penalties. Using a customs broker does not transfer responsibility—the importer of record remains legally and financially accountable.
Freight increases, unavailable vessel space, port congestion, customs examinations, storage charges and late deliveries can quickly eliminate the apparent savings from buying directly. If defective material arrives, recovering damages from an overseas factory can be extremely difficult.
When Something Goes Wrong
No responsible supplier should claim that a quality issue can never occur. What matters is what happens when one does.
On the very rare occasion that a quality issue occurs, Material Specialist takes ownership of the problem.
We:
- investigate the issue
- coordinate testing when necessary
- work directly with the manufacturing source
- determine corrective action
- and communicate with our distributor customer throughout the process.
Our customer does not have to chase a factory thousands of miles away.
Material Specialist is responsible.
